WALKING TO THE BROOM CLOTHER

As steward of God's house, an overseer must be blameless (Titus 1:7)

Writer and chaplain Stuart Briscoe wrote about the funeral of a war veteran, where his military comrades served on the occasion. They asked the priest to lead them to the coffin for a moment of silence. Then they would follow the priest out the side door.

The plan was executed according to military precision. But it turned out that the priest actually led them to walk towards the broom closet. As a result, the soldiers retreated oddly.

The pastor was unintentionally wrong, but it illustrates that leaders must know where they are going. Wherever the leader goes, that's where his followers follow.

Paul left Titus on the island of Crete to testify of Jesus Christ. Titus had to appoint several leaders for the newly growing congregation. Apart from preaching the gospel, nothing Titus did for the church on Crete was more important than finding the right leader for them.

Church leaders must meet the standards set out in Titus 1:6-9 and guide others to greater maturity in their relationship with Christ. And his followers must lovingly trust their spiritual leader to achieve that goal.

Whether you are a leader or a follower, know where you are going. If not, then you will end up in the wrong place -HWR
