NOT ENOUGH

What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, but he destroys or harms himself? (Luke 9:25)

The writer of Ecclesiastes says that pleasures, possessions, and even great knowledge do not bring lasting satisfaction. Jesus' words even went beyond that. He said that a person who has everything on this earth, but is not ready for eternity is spiritually dead. We all need more than fun, money and fame.

Thinking about this makes me think of some famous people who committed suicide. One was a baseball star, several were entertainment workers, and the other two were heirs to huge fortunes. I also remember a highly respected scholar and his wife who were taking lethal doses of drugs together when they learned that her wife had terminal cancer. These people fail to find the meaning of their life.

Because we were created in God's image, our lives have meaning, both now and in eternity. God created us for His glory and put us in this world to honor Him. We have an extraordinary ability to meditate on Him and eternity.

Believing that Jesus died for our sins and rose again will fulfill our need for meaning in life. Salvation guarantees that we have been forgiven. We have an eternal destiny and a heavenly hope. This is enough to bring deep peace and joy to our lives. Have you found this happening in your life? --HVL
