BLESSED TO BLESS

I will bless you and make your name famous; and you will be a blessing (Genesis 12:2)

When I re-read chapter 12 (Genesis 12:1-20) of the book of Genesis, the words found in the second verse of that chapter took on a surprising new meaning to me. Whenever I studied this passage of God's words before, my mind was always filled with God's promises (only) to Abraham and the nation of Israel so I ignored the practical teachings of this passage of God's words that are meant for every Christian.

Clearly we can read God's words to Abraham: "I will bless you...and you will be a blessing." Yes, Abraham was blessed to bless! What he receives is not for personal enjoyment alone, but also for the well-being and goodness of others.

The same is true for every believer today. God has done miraculous works in our lives and He wants us to share them with others. We, who believe in Jesus and receive the blessings of the salvation He has given, have been saved to "save" others. Although our relationship with Christ gives us personal satisfaction, He redeems us so that we go and "preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15). Likewise God comforts us in our troubles "so that we can comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort that we ourselves receive from God" (2 Corinthians 1:4).

We have been blessed for the purpose of blessing others! Let God do His work through us -- RWD

GIVES FREELY TO US SO THAT WE FREELY GIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE
