I will never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 6:14)
In the late 19th century, a former Oxford University student became Chancellor of England. One of his classmates became the British Foreign Secretary. The third person has earned an international reputation as an author. Meanwhile, the fourth person, Temple Gairdner, is perhaps the most gifted student among his classmates, but he is not a person who is famous and influential. Why is that? Because he has accepted Jesus as his Savior and lives as a missionary in a remote and dangerous area.
Actually Gairdner could have become as famous as his friends. However, when he decided to become a missionary, he wrote to his sister, "I feel an ambition that is very difficult to quench. If you look at someone's high family and educational background, the ambition to be famous and famous seems natural. It's very difficult to get away from it all and want to die anonymously."
We may not be asked to make such sacrifices. But are we willing to serve the Savior with full obedience? To serve Him faithfully we must put aside our own interests, as Paul did: "By no means will I boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Galatians 6:14).
We don't need to be famous. However, we need to be faithful to wherever God calls us —VCG
