WILL YOU COME BACK?

Do not praise yourself for tomorrow, because you do not know what will happen that day (Proverbs 27:1)

I read the following article in a medical magazine: After completing a thorough medical examination, a 78 year old man was advised by his doctor to come back six months later for a re-examination. The elderly patient shook his head and said, "Doctor, I'm not sure I'll be able to come back then."

"Do not worry!" replied the doctor soothingly, "You can still come back for many years to come." The old man looked at his doctor in surprise and then explained, "I mean, at that point I'll be in Florida. I go there every January."

This story can make us smile, but the bias of the questions it raises may not necessarily keep us smiling. Will you and I come back tomorrow, next month or next year? Indeed, it is wise to set goals for the future, but we must do this while still realizing that in this life anything is possible.

James reminds us in today's Bible reading that "Life is like a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes" (Proverbs 21:14). Therefore we must say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this and that" (Proverbs 21:15).

Will you be back in six months? Let this question encourage us to live more faithfully to our Lord Jesus Christ today -- RWD
