WHY DO WE PRAY?

Persevere in prayer and in the meantime watch with thanksgiving (Colossians 4:2)

One of the well-known paradoxes of the Christian faith is that God wants us to tell Him everything that we experience, even though He already knows everything. Then why do we need to pray?

If you've ever struggled with a question like this, perhaps the thoughts of a 19th-century pastor, RA Torrey, can help. He gives several reasons why we should pray:

* Because of the devil, and prayer is one of the ways God chose to fight him (Ephesians 6:12-13,18).

* Because prayer is God's way of getting us what we need from Him (Luke 11:3-13; James 4:2).

* Because prayer is God's chosen means so that we can find "grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:16).

* Because prayer accompanied by thanksgiving is God's way of giving us relief from worry and feeling "the peace of God" (Philippians 4:6-7).

Apart from the reasons above, we actually just need to read the commandment written in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, "Keep on praying," and realize that God wants us to have a conversation with Him. Yes, He is an all-knowing God, but He also desires fellowship with us. When we seek God's face in prayer, we are deepening our relationship with Him. This is the most important reason why we need to pray -- JDB
