That is why the women said to Naomi, "Blessed be the Lord, who has been willing to help you today with a ransom" (Ruth 4:14).
A wise man once said to me, "Don't be quick to judge whether something is a blessing or a curse for us." Naomi's story reminds me of that.
The name Naomi means "my joy". However, when bad things happen to her, Naomi wants to change her name to adjust to the circumstances she is in. After her husband and sons died, Naomi concluded, "God's hand is stretched out on me!" (Ruth 1:13). When people greeted her, she said, "Don't call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has done many bitter things to me" (verse 20).
Naomi did not judge her situation on the basis of her identity as a follower of the one true God and who has expressed unflagging love for His people. Instead, he did what most of us tend to do: He judged God by the circumstances he was in. And he misjudged. The hand of God was not extended to him. In fact, Naomi actually got God's treasure that she had not found. Even though Naomi loses her husband and two sons, she is given something she never expected -- a faithful daughter-in-law and a grandson who will send down a Savior.
From Naomi's life story and experiences, we can see that sometimes the worst things that happen to us can open doors for God to give us the best in our lives --JAL
