KEEP IT UP

Even when I am old and gray-headed, O God, do not forsake me, that I may declare your power to this generation (Psalm 71:18)

Being old does not mean being useless. Being old can mean growing, becoming mature, serving, serving, taking risks, enjoying ourselves to the end of our lives. "Older people need to be explorers," said author TS Eliot. One of my friends said, "Have fun while you're alive."

Wasting time in our old age is depriving us of the best possible years of our lives. It also prevents God-given grace from enriching His church. There is still service to be done and victories to be won.

Some parents may not have the energy or inclination to lead, but they are an invaluable asset to the next generation of leaders. Someone asked John Wesley what he would do if he knew his life was short. He replied, "I want to regenerate young people until that time comes, when I am called to give my spirit back to Him who gave it."

The psalmist also longed to pass on his understanding of God to others, and he prayed, “Even to old age and gray-headedness, O God, forsake me not, that I may declare thy power unto this generation” (Psalm 71:18).

We too must remain open to God's use to enrich the lives of others. Perhaps the greatest benefit of ourselves is to pass on our understanding of Allah to others —DHR
