I am Alpha and Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come (Revelation 1:8)
The meaning of the words Alpha and Omega, terms that refer to the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, is very easy to understand. Like the letters A and Z, Alpha and Omega also mean the letters "first" and "last".
In this life, we can understand this concept easily. Something begins ... and ends. Work begins ... then ends. The years came ... then passed. Birth...death.
However, there is something special and unique about the words Alpha and Omega listed in the book of Revelation (1:8,11; 21:6; 22:13). Jesus Christ used the term to describe Himself. The term refers to His deity.
In the Bible, these two words have a meaning so deep that it is almost incomprehensible. Jesus, the Alpha had no beginning. He existed before all things existed and before the foundation of the world (John 1:1). As the main cause of everything in this world (verses 2,3), Jesus cannot be limited by the word Alpha. And as Omega, as we know, He is not "the end". He will continue to live in the eternal and endless future.
It is amazing and thrilling to see this view of our Lord. He is the only one “who is and who was and who is to come” (Revelation 1:8). He is Alpha and Omega, Almighty God. Not only that, He is our Savior (Titus 2:13). Therefore, He is worthy of praise, our lives, and all that is ours! --Dave Branon
