CENTER OF ATTENTION

Mind on things above, not on things on earth (Colossians 3:2)

A missionary pilot named Bernie May wrote, “The hardest lesson new pilots are taught about landing on short and dangerous runways is to keep their eyes on the good part of the runway, rather than the bad part.

Our natural tendency is to pay attention to obstacles, dangers, and things we want to avoid. But experience teaches us that pilots who pay attention to things that are dangerous sooner or later will head to the center of destruction."

This lesson made me think about the spiritual principles in the Bible. Instead of focusing on the sins we want to avoid, we are taught to focus on the good works that Christ expects of us. Paul told the Christians at Colossae, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3: 2). We will get rid of the old way of thinking and acting (verses 5-9), and "put on" the new way of life (verses 10-17).

Bernie May concludes by saying that experienced pilots are fully focused on their desired landing path, whereas the hazards or risks involved receive little attention.

When Christ and His will are at the center of our lives, then the attraction of the old life is not the center of our attention because our goal is to land right at the center of God's will --David McCasland
