PERMANENT PERSPECTIVE

Think on things above, not on things on earth (Colossians 3:2)

In Gladiator, General Maximus Decimus Meridius tries to rekindle the spirit of his cavalry to fight well in the battle against the Germanians that will soon take place. He addressed his troops and challenged them to give their best. He made a profound statement, "What we do in this life continues through eternity."

The words of the military leader in the fictional story contain a powerful concept that has special meaning for people who believe in Christ. We don't just occupy time and space on a rock floating in the universe. We are here with the opportunity to make an eternal difference with our lives.

Jesus himself said, "Gather up for yourselves treasures in heaven; in heaven moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal" (Matthew 6:20). By having a perspective of living for eternity, then we can make a difference in this world.

How can we think of "the things above"? (Colossians 3:2). A good way to start is by discovering the values of our eternal God. Throughout the pages of the Bible, He reminds us that He values people more than material possessions, and values character over our accomplishments. These are all truths that last forever. By adhering to these things we will have an eternal perspective in everyday life --WEC
