LOVE BEYOND LOVE

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength (Deuteronomy 6:5)

From childhood we are encouraged to show love, for parents, for pets or for friends, and especially for Jesus. But what is love?

We think of love as an emotion, a tender feeling, and a positive action. So, when the Bible commands us to love God and neighbor, we may be confused about the meaning of that love (Matthew 22:37-40).

Feelings are not something you can control. A mother can command her child to like spinach, but she cannot force him to react positively when faced with the green vegetable.

So, love is definitely more than just an emotion. An ancient translation of God's command may help us understand love as an act we choose: "Love…." To love means to choose to be patient, generous, not boastful, and not arrogant (1 Corinthians 13: 4,5). We can love others even though we may not like them, because love is about making choices.

Yes, we can respond obediently to do what our Savior directed. However, He knows that we cannot do this alone. Therefore He gave the Holy Spirit who enables us to live an obedient life. With His help, we can learn to love those we don't like. Who knows? We might even start to like them -VCG
