But I trust in you, O Lord (Psalm 31:15)
Many people are afraid to get on planes. The thought of flying through the air made them anxious. Therefore, the American Phobia Community recommends the following techniques for dealing with this fear.
• Do not consume sugar and caffeine before and during the flight.
• Lean backwards during takeoff; let your muscles relax.
• Rate your anxiety on a scale of 1 to 10. Think positive things; notice how much
much of your fear is reduced.
• Take a deep breath; close your eyes; stretch your arms.
• Wear a rubber band on your wrist and snap the rubber band to get rid of thoughts
which is not fun.
These five pieces of advice are good. But I have a sixth piece of advice that can overcome all kinds of fears. In fact, this is the most important thing: Put your trust in God.
That is what David did in Psalm 31. There was a conspiracy against him. Friends have left. His power seems to be over. Death awaits before our eyes. But he made a choice and exclaimed, “But in thee do I put my trust, O Lord” (verse 15).
When you are afraid, taking deep breaths or snapping a rubber band may help reduce the fear. But don't abandon the best way to deal with a fear of flying—or any other fear. Follow David's example and put your trust in God -DCE
