HURRY DISEASE

It's not as if I have achieved this or have perfected it, but rather I am pursuing it (Philippians 3:12)

"Quick!" "We're late!" "You're too slow!" How often do expressions of impatience suddenly appear in our conversations, pointing to the rush of our lives? If we are not careful, we can become people who are always in a hurry, who demands that everything comes immediately and results immediately. Stress experts call this the "rush sickness."

In Philippians 3, the Apostle Paul says that lifelong growth reminds us that the process of Christian maturity can be encouraged, but not accelerated. In Overcomers Through the Cross, Paul Billheimer says that just as God needed time to make oak trees, He needed time to form saints. Christian maturity is a lifelong process.

Billheimer wrote, "An unripe apple is bad to eat, but we shouldn't blame it. It's not good to eat because God hasn't finished making it yet. It's a step in the process and that's fine."

Are you impatient with your spiritual development? Remember, God isn't done with you yet—but He also doesn't expect you to remain spiritually immature until He calls you home. Make sure that your goal in life is to understand Christ and become like Him. Then slowly but surely, under blue skies and through storms, He will guide you to maturity. This is how He definitively cures your "rush sickness" -JEY
