So, if a person knows how to do good, but he does not do it, he is sinning (James 4:17)
In his book Eight Men Out, Eliot Asinof describes the events that took place in the infamous "Black Sox" scandal of 1919. Eight members of the Chicago White Sox baseball club are accused of taking bribes from gamblers as compensation for losing world-class matches . Although never found guilty in court, all eight were banned from playing baseball for life.
But one of them, Buck Weaver, claimed that he had played for his club to win even though he knew there was a conspiracy. Although Weaver's on-field performances did support his claim, the Kenesaw Mountain Landis baseball commission ruled that anyone who became aware of the scandal, but did not prevent it, would still be banned from playing. Weaver was not punished for doing wrong, but for failing to do right.
In his letter to the first-century church, James wrote, "So if anyone knows how to do good, but does not do it, he is a sinner" (James 4:17). In a world filled with evil and darkness, Christ's followers have the opportunity to shine their light. Often that means we have to fight the urge to keep quiet.
