Give thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that he may discern between good and evil (1 Kings 3: 9)
If God were to grant all your desires, then what would you ask for? When Solomon was given that choice, he asked for wisdom to distinguish between good and evil in order to lead God's people well (1 Kings 3: 9). "Because you have asked for such a thing," God said to Solomon, "I have done according to your request." God even promised to give him "riches and glory" (verses 11-13). Solomon is remembered to this day for the great wisdom God gave him.
Solomon began his reign by serving the wisdom of God and had a deep ambition to build a very beautiful Temple to the glory of God. However, something happened in the course of his life. His desire to live by the wisdom of God was replaced by the allure of wealth and position that God had given him. His marriage to an idol -worshiping foreign woman eventually led him - and eventually his nation as well - to idolatry.
The lesson to be learned here is very clear. Loving Christ and His wisdom should always be the main goal for us who want to live to please God throughout this life. Commitment to be faithful to the riches of God's wisdom will enable us to avoid the deviations that destroyed Solomon.
Keep your heart in tune with God's wisdom and obey His voice. That's the way to end this life well --JMS
