LEAVING SO JUST

I myself will guide you and give you peace (Exodus 33:14)

After winning a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, wrestler Rulon Gardner took off his two shoes, placed them on the center of the mat, and left them crying. Through this symbolic gesture, Gardner announced his retirement from the sport he had been practicing for many years.

There will come a time for all of us to leave something behind in life, and that time may be emotionally painful. Someone we love leaves us through death. A child leaves the house. We leave a job or community and we feel as if we have left it all behind us. But if we know God, we will not walk alone into an uncertain future.

We need to be silent and reflect on how the children of Israel left something very big when Moses led them out of Egypt. They left behind the heavy burden of slavery, but they also left behind all the stable and predictable things they had come to know. Later, when the Lord said to Moses, I myself will guide you and give you peace (Ex. 33:14) , Moses replied, If You yourself do not guide us, do not tell us to leave here (verse 15).

In times of our most difficult times, God's presence and peace gives us stability. Because He is with us, we can walk into the future with confidence.-DCM
