All kinds of impurity or greed are not mentioned even among you,. . . Likewise unclean, empty or careless words (Ephesians 5: 3,4)
As president, Abraham Lincoln faced tremendous pressure during the United States Civil War. Without humor, there is no doubt that he can endure the pressure. At various cabinet meetings, when things got tense, he would often tell a funny story to relieve tension. By laughing at himself, he didn't become a defensive person. And a good story that is so effective at times can soften the heart of the enemy.
Spontaneous humor reflects the way God created humans. Humor is useful for humans physically and emotionally. Laughter can prevent a tense atmosphere from ending up with bitter words or hurt feelings.
Even though Jesus was a man of sorrow and a regular sufferer of pain ( Isaiah 53: 3) , I am sure He laughed a lot. Sometimes Jesus used humor to explain things. Imagine a camel trying to get through the pinhole! (Matthew 19:24).
However, humor also has its downside. Paul calls it reckless and it should not have a place in the life of a believer (Ephesians 5: 4). It humiliates, humiliates, and defiles those who speak it and those who hear it.
So, what are we laughing at? What kind of stories do we tell each other? Will Jesus laugh with us? I'm sure he'll laugh, if the humor is healthy -DJD
