LIKE HIS PROMISE

God's word is true, He does everything faithfully (Psalm 33:4)

One of the unspoken rules among western Americans is that one always keeps one's word. That is why Andrew Garcia bothered to travel almost 2100 km in 1879 to pay off his debts. In September of the previous year, he had purchased supplies in Bozeman, Montana, for hunting wild buffalo. But to pay for the ten mules, the ammunition, food and equipment he bought he still had a $300 shortfall. Hence a merchant lent him money. He also promised to pay it off on January 1.

But the winter snow fell earlier that year, so Garcia couldn't get to Bozeman straight away. He had to go through Colorado and down to New Mexico. Finally, exactly a year later, he returned to Bozeman. "You needn't bother with that," said his friends. But Garcia felt compelled to keep his promise, so he actually came back to repay his debt.

Followers of Christ should also be known as people of integrity. If we say we're going to help out at Sunday school or childcare, or spend time with our family, or get some work done, do we always keep our word even when something more exciting later emerges? Are we true to our promises?

God's promises are never broken (Psalm 119:160), and whatever He does, He always does with faithfulness (Psalm 33:4). As His followers, our promises must always be kept like His promises --DCE
