BENEFITS OF SUFFERING

Who is there for me in heaven besides You? Besides you there is nothing I want on earth (Psalm 73:25)

A cynical person asked an old Christian, who had been seriously ill for 20 years, “What do you think about God right now?” The person replied, “I depend on Him even more in these circumstances.”

Suffering can indeed be a means to draw closer to God. When misfortune comes in a barrage and undermines health, friends, money, and good times, then Allah becomes the only handle in our life. We love Him solely for who He is and not for the things He gives.

At such times, we will tend to cry out like the psalmist, “Who is there for me in heaven besides You? Apart from You there is nothing I desire on earth” (Psalm 73:25). Suffering can lead us to a point where we can say, “Even though my flesh and my heart are consumed, my rock and my portion will remain God forever” (v. 26).

Then we must also remember that in front of us lies heaven, where "He will wipe away all tears from their eyes, and death will be no more; there will be no more mourning, or crying, or sorrow" (Revelation 21:4). Suffering will lead us to a place that does not know the feeling of loss--a place where there is no sorrow, where we will only rejoice and serve God. This is the right way to look at suffering. This is the benefit of suffering--DHR

WHEN WE HAVE NOTHING ELSE BUT GOD
WE WILL FIND THAT GOD ALONE IS ENOUGH
