Blessed are those who rely on God, who put their hope in God! (Jeremiah 17:7)
Let's talk honestly. Can we always trust ourselves in everything? Even the Apostle Paul said emphatically about himself, "I discipline my body and master it completely, so that after preaching the gospel to others, I myself should not be disqualified" (1 Corinthians 9:27). He will not trust himself to do the right thing unless he keeps his body under strict discipline.
Today's Bible reading reminds us of "how treacherous the heart is, more treacherous than anything, its heart is hardened: who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). We cannot possibly measure the level of cunning of our hearts. So how can we trust ourselves or others completely?
The prophet Jeremiah warned the last kings of Judah not to rely on worldly kings (verse 5,6). However, apparently they are constantly looking for help from Egypt. How stupid they are! They should repent of their wickedness and turn to seek the help of Almighty God.
Who can we count on to help us in times of difficulty and uncertainty? God's Word says that those who rely on God are like a tree planted by the waters. Even in the dry season they will not stop bearing fruit (verse 7,8).
Let's trust God to produce fruit in our lives - AL
