GET WORK

You shall have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:3)

The ability to work is a wonderful gift, but do we glorify it too much? In the past, people completed their work in the office, but now they also work from home via e-mail and phone.

Dr. Dave Arnott, an assistant professor of management at Dallas Baptist University, says, "I don't know whether work is replacing family and society at the moment, or if family and society are conversely giving way to work. But I recognize that a movement like this is underway. Jobs seem to be determine one's identity." We tend to equate our identity with our work.

The head of the Families and Work Institute said, "Your high level of activity has become something of pride... and a status symbol," though many people complain about it.

Getting a job is not a new problem. In the first commandment, God said, "You shall have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3). Our work is included in it. Through the God-given gift of work, we can honor Him, provide for our families, and help those in need.

Do not make work our main source of satisfaction; that satisfaction must come from God Himself. Whatever our job, we must put the work in the right perspective.

God and family are more important than our dedication to work. Work is a gift, nothing else --David McCasland
