God … has bestowed upon us all spiritual blessings in heaven (Ephesians 1:3)
Tennis star Arthur Ashe died of AIDS, which he contracted through a blood transfusion during heart surgery. More than just a great athlete, Ashe was a man who inspired and encouraged many with his exemplary behavior on and off the court.
Ashe could have experienced the bitterness of life and self-pity when facing her illness. But he maintained an attitude of gratitude. He explained, “If I ask, 'Why me?' about my difficulties, I also have to ask, 'Why me?' about the blessings I received. Why did I win Wimbledon? Why am I the one who married a beautiful, talented woman and had an amazing child?”
Ashe's attitude rebukes some of us who often complain, “Why me? Why did God allow this to happen?” Even though we experience great suffering, we should not forget God's mercy that is poured out in our lives—such as food, shelter, and friends—blessings that many people do not have.
Then what about spiritual blessings? We can hold the word of God and read it. We have the knowledge of His saving grace, the comfort of His Spirit, and the joy of the confidence of eternal life with Jesus.
Think about God's blessings and ask, "Why me?" Then your grumbling will pave the way for praise —Vernon Grounds
