I always intend to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and are firm in the truth that you have received (2 Peter 1:12)
How can it happen that people who have experienced the same event retain completely different memories of the event? An article in the Associated Press summarizes the results of dozens of studies of human memory: Human memory cannot record indelible memories. Human memory is fragile, incomplete, malleable, and very easily influenced by input from others.
Memories can change over time. In some cases, people will slightly change their version of events through each retelling, much like a fisherman exaggerating a story about a fish that escaped. However, an objective and factual record can correct distorted memories, which we can accept.
Peter wrote two letters to give us an accurate and enduring record of God's truth. I always intend to remind you of all that, even though you already know it and are firm in the truth that you have received. ... I will try, so that ... you always remember all of that (2 Peter 1:12,15).
Our fragile memories need constant refreshment through the unchanging record of God's word, the Bible. Through this reliable reminder, we can keep our minds from drifting secretly towards a purely human perspective of life.
