FAVORITE NEWS FOR ALL

Then the angel said to them: Do not be afraid, for truly I bring you good news of great joy for all nations (Luke 2:10).

The angel who announced the news of Jesus' birth to the shepherds said he came to them with "news of great joy" (Luke 2:10). Many people have heard the word "excitement," but they don't understand it. They love Christmas because it is a time to decorate their homes, go shopping, attend various Christmas celebrations or exchange gifts with their loved ones. But after all the fun is over, they feel empty again and all the joy is gone.

Others just do not like the time of Christmas. They don't have enough money to buy gifts or decorate the house. There are also no friends to celebrate Christmas with. The atmosphere of joy for them only adds to the feeling of deep sorrow.

The problem of the two groups above is the error in interpreting the "great joy" that the angel of the Lord proclaimed. The great joy is not found in outward things but in the true meaning of Christmas. When Jesus was born, God became human so that we could be redeemed from all sins and have eternal life. This is the key to that great joy. The shepherds returned to their duties in the dark and cold night, but now they "praise and glorify God" (Luke 2:20).

The true meaning of Christmas is: "good news for all the nations" (Luke 2:10) -- HVL
