JOY IN TRAGEDY?

Think of it as joy when you fall into various trials (James 1:2)

Celebrating bankruptcy? We would all think how stupid it was! But the mother of a writer named Leo Buscaglia did just that.

Her husband came home one evening and sadly told his family that his business partner had taken away all of the company's assets. Bankruptcy is inevitable.

Instead of sinking into despair, Leo's mother went out, pawned some of her jewelry, and prepared a delicious dinner. When family members protested, he replied, "The time of rejoicing is now when we need it most, not next week."

Mrs. Buscaglia's response to her family's financial crisis reminded me of the New Testament directive: "Consider it joy when you fall into various trials" (James 1:2).

Have you been going through any difficulties lately? Does tragedy grip your heart with fear and sadness? God doesn't want you to be a hypocrite with a smile on your face. But He wants you to trust Him through all of those circumstances -- including tragedy! He wants you to accept failure, sickness, and loss as opportunities to grow in faith and obedience.

Our wise and loving heavenly Father longs for us to yield to His almighty control. Only by doing so can we agree with the words of James and be able to rejoice in tragedy -- VCG
