Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain (Exodus 20:7)
Sometimes it is not easy for us to keep up with the shorthand pace that accompanies fast and modern electronic communications. In IM-speak (internet chat) or text messaging language, the word laughing out loud is shortened to "lol". By the way (by the way) to "btw". And regrettably, some people use "omg" for Oh, my God! (Oh Lord!)
This last sentence seemed to be on the lips of many people who were receiving shocking news. However, as Christians, we should no longer utter this sentence or any other sentence that uses the name of Allah in a reckless manner.
In Matthew 6, when Jesus taught His disciples about prayer, the first thing He taught them was: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name" (verse 9). There it seems clear to us that the name of Allah itself is special. God's name includes His attributes, teachings, and moral authority. To say the name of Allah means to call upon the Creator and Sustainer of this universe.
As much as possible, we should honor and protect God's holy name, and guard against using that name only when we speak of Him or address Him in faith.
Let us be careful not to turn the holy name of our wonderful and great God into mere frivolous words spoken on our lips or written in text messages --JDB
