OUTBREAK

In the same way, the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life (John 3: 14,15).

In March 1918, Albert Gitchell, an army cook in Fort Riley, Kansas, was diagnosed with the flu. By the time the year was over, the disease had spread around the world, killing an estimated 40 million people. This highly contagious virus is becoming an epidemic -- a case of global spread of the disease.

A doctor reports that patients quickly develop flu-like symptoms, which progress to the most severe form of pneumonia, then suffocate within hours. Fortunately, the influenza soon disappeared in just as mysterious a way as when it struck. However, the doctors remained astonished at the cause and were unable to find a cure.

The ancient Israelites also suffered from a terrible plague, but they knew the cause and asked Moses for a cure. They were ungrateful and complained to Allah for the manna He had provided. In His wrath, Allah sent a snake whose bite would leave a mortal wound. Then He told Moses to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole. Anyone who sees the pillar will be healed (Numbers 21:1-9).

Centuries later, Jesus said that the bronze serpent was a symbol of His death on the cross, "In the same way the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life" (John 3:14-15) .
