The desired trait in a person is loyalty; better than a poor man than a liar (Proverbs 19:22)
An honest and kind man drove down the streets of San Francisco for over an hour. He was about to find a woman with a wallet filled with 1,792 dollars left in the back seat of the taxi. I love what he says when some of his fellow taxi drivers make fun of him for not taking the money. He answered them, I am the card bearer of the Christian faith. What's the point of going to church if you don't practice what is preached?
In the book of Exodus 23, the principles of honesty and goodness are given simultaneously to the nation of Israel in the law God gave to them. They must be honest enough to return the stray cattle to their owners, even though the person is an enemy (verse 4). They must be kind enough to their enemies to help the stubborn donkey to stand up (verse 5). They must be very careful so that the poor are treated fairly and given help, even if doing so can be detrimental (verses 6-9). The landowners had to let their land in the seventh year, and allow the poor to freely gather a little of the produce of the field (vv. 10,11).
An honest person can be a cruel person. A kind person may be soft and pay little attention to the truth. However, if you put honesty and kindness together, the two of them will make a great couple who honor God and bless their fellow HVLs.
