For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome, a great King over all the earth (Psalm 47: 3)

The following word is used frequently and we hear it in a very unusual context. The word is powerful.

One time my 9 year old grandson Josh and I were playing a remote controlled race car in the living room. Several times he said, "Amazing!"

On another occasion, while my wife and I were leaving the restaurant, the restaurant manager who was standing at the door asked, "Did everything satisfy you?" "Yes," I replied. "Powerful!" he said.

These two events made me think: While playing with my grandchildren and enjoying a meal in a restaurant is great fun, are these experiences really that great? So, I opened Mr's dictionary. Webster full edition. The main definition records the meaning of devastating as "profound respect," "terrible," "great." It reminded me of standing on the southern edge of the Grand Canyon. It is truly a tremendous experience.

Then, I thought of a much more terrible reality, which is to know the Creator and Sustainer of this entire universe. So, it is not surprising when the psalmist writes a sentence like this, “God, the Most High, is terrible ” (Psalm 47: 3).

Next time when we hear a terrible word, may that word remind us of our great God, who is truly terrible! --DJD
