Only near God I am calm (Psalm 62:2)
On the wall behind the pulpit of the church I attended as a teenager was written: God is in His holy temple. Be silent before him, all the earth! (Habakkuk 2:20). And we are silent! We eight boys said nothing to each other as we sat waiting for the service to start.
I love the quiet times and every so often I manage to get thoughts of girls and the Detroit Tigers out of my head. I try my best to meditate on the wonders of God and His salvation. And in silence, I often feel His presence.
Today we live in a noisy world. Many people can't even drive a car without loud music from their car, or thumping bass thumping their vehicle. In fact many church services are marked more by fanfare than by quiet time.
In ancient times, idol worshipers shouted loudly at their idols (1 Kings 18:25-29). Through sharp contrasts, the psalmist sees wisdom in silence, for in quiet reverence God can be heard. In the stillness of the night under a starry sky, in the quiet prayer room, in the quiet room of the house, we can meet the living God and hear Him speak.
The psalmist's words are still relevant to this day: Only in God do I rest (Psalm 62:6) HVL
