GOD AND FREEDOM

Know that the LORD is God; He is the one who made us and owns us, His people and the flock of His shepherd (Psalm 100:3)

When the members of the Second Continental Congress approved the special document known as The Declaration of Independence, they frankly declared their belief in God. The drafters of this precious statement knew that the true freedom they meant could only work well when society recognized the Creator. They corroborate with the sentence that God "blesses" everyone with the right to "live, be free, and seek happiness" because in God's sight, every human being is valuable.

Thomas Jefferson, who is often referred to as an agnostic, was deeply distressed by the rampant injustice and sin of his time. He wrote, "I trembled, because of my country, when I confessed that God exists." If at that time he had trembled, seeing injustice and sin today surely he would have experienced even more severe attacks!

What about our current society? Gradually we begin to lose the freedom that God has given us, because more and more people are denying that God is God. With the refusal to acknowledge God on the rise, it is no wonder that violent crime has been on the rise over the past 20 years!

True independence will never be enjoyed by those who refuse to fear God. Let's pray for our nation and be determined to return to life as God's people should do -- HVL

BLESSED IS THE NATION WHOSE GOD IS THE LORD
