The word friend can be defined as "a person's closeness to another because of affection, respect, or mutual respect; a very intimate friend." Jesus defined friendship this way: "You are my friends, if you do what I command you.... I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father" (John 15:14- 15).
A friend is someone we share stories with and who never betrays a trust. True friends will not utter words that hurt us. If we heard of a group of Christians finding fault with other Christians, we might wonder what they would say about us if we weren't in their presence?
A true friend is someone who knows everything about us and loves us completely. One young person referred to such a friend as "someone who stays with you forever after they become your friend."
A true friend is someone in front of whom we can appear as they are without fear of misunderstandings. He is not someone who secretly talks about us with others, but a person where we can open the secrets of our heart, with the belief that he will not betray us. Such a friend is Jesus, the perfect Person who fulfills Solomon's words: "A friend loves at all times" (Proverbs 17:17).
