He has saved us...because of His grace...so that we, as people justified by His grace, deserve eternal life (Titus 3:5,7)
John Newton, author of the famous song Amazing Grace, was a man who had his life messed up at the age of 23. It engages in immoral lifestyles and participates in the barbaric African slave trade. But he was fed up with his sinful way of life.
On March 10, 1748 his ship was hit by a storm. Thinking that all was lost, Newton cried out in fear, "Lord, have mercy on us!" Suddenly the word mercy hit his heart deeply. If everyone needs it, so does he. At that very moment he believed in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. God forgave all his sins and broke the chains of his evil life.
The Apostle Paul directs us to His grace and mercy in salvation. He stated that because of His grace we are justified and freed from guilt for all our sins (Titus 3:7). But he also said that it is the grace of God that frees us from a lifestyle that he says is, "ignorance, disobedience, perversion, being a slave to various passions and desires, living in evil and malice, abomination and hating one another" (Titus 3:3 ).
Let us thank God every day for His grace and mercy. Christ provides perfect salvation for us -- HVL
