LITTLE BY LITTLE

Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you are so fruitful, that you may possess the land (Exodus 23:30)

When I was little, Mother gave me her precious reading book to help me study. The book had helped him study several years ago. I loved one of the stories, but I never imagined how much it affected me years later.

The story is about a boy with a small shovel. He tried to get rid of the heavy snow that had just fallen and covered the road in front of his house. A man stops and observes the heavy work the boy is doing. "Son," the man rebuked, "how can a child as small as you complete such a heavy job?" The boy turned his head and answered confidently, "Little by little, that's how it goes!" Then he shoveled again.

God planted the seed of that story in me when I was rising from a slump. I remember how the "adult" figure reproached the weak "child" within me: "How can someone as helpless as you get rid of a mountain this high?" The boy's answer became mine: "Little by little, that's how it goes!" And I did get over it—in dependence on God. However, it was only a small victory after another victory.

The challenges that Israel faced when it came to seizing the Promised Land seemed difficult to get rid of. However, Allah did not tell them to finish it in an instant.

"Little by little" is a strategy to achieve victory —JEY
