Which of these three people, in your opinion, is a fellow human of the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? (Luke 10:36)
When Fred Rogers died on February 27, 2003, many newspapers carried the story as front page. And almost every headline contains the word fellow. He is the host of a children's television show called Sesama Pak Rogers. He is known by millions of children and parents as a kind, gentle, and warm person who sincerely considers "everyone is special, in who they are, as they are".
Mr. Rogers once said to a reporter, "When we look at our neighbor with appreciation, ... with gratitude for what he is, then I feel that we are hand in hand with Christ Jesus, the defender of true goodness." Because he appreciated the importance of everyone's life, Rogers was able to be a good neighbor to everyone.
When Jesus was asked, "Who is my neighbor?" He tells the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-35). At the end of the story, God asks, "Which of these three people, in your opinion, is a fellow human being from the one who fell into the hands of the robbers?" The answer: "Those who have shown mercy to him" (verses 36,37).
Who among us needs a kind word, a helping hand of friendship, or an encouragement of encouragement today? Jesus calls us to show love and compassion to others as we love God with all our hearts, and love our neighbor as ourselves --David McCasland
