Is it human, so that You remember it? (Psalm 8: 5)
The song is called Who Am I? [Who Am I?] by Mark Hall of the musical group Casting Crowns, begins with these lines: "Who am I, that the Lord of the earth wants to know my name, wants to feel the pain I'm in?"
In this song, Hall compares our lives to "flowers that quickly wither, which appear today and disappear the next day ... like a drop of water vapor in the air". He pondered, "When we understand how small we really are and how extraordinary God is, then God's love will be even greater for us."
I then remembered David's question in Psalm 8. As he contemplated the heavens, the moon, and the stars, he marveled at the God of the universe who created and sustained them all. In amazement, he posed the question, "Is it human, so that You remember him?" (verse 5).
Why are we objects of God's love, care, and thoughts? In his song, Hall answers that question by: "Not because of who I am, but because of what You have done; not because of what I have done, but because of who You are."
Who is God? He is love. What has God done? He gave His only begotten Son Jesus to die for us and pay the penalty for our sins (1 John 4: 7-9). No wonder we want to exclaim with the psalmist, "O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is thy name in all the earth!" (Psalm 8: 2,10) --AMC
