Father, I have sinned against heaven and against the Father, and am no more worthy to be called the Son of the Father (Luke 15:21)
A sincere apology can be the first step towards forgiveness. Colleen O Connor writes in The Denver Post: Successful apologies can dissolve anger, shame, show respect, build trust, and help prevent further misunderstanding. Genuine apologies make it much easier for people to forgive.
Author Barbara Engel says that true apology depends on three things: regret, responsibility, and change.
In Jesus' parable of the prodigal son it is told that the stubborn young man who returned home after squandering his inheritance, approached his father with humility and guilt, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against the Father, I am no longer worthy to be called the son of the Father ( Luke 15:21) . He showed remorse for the wounds he had inflicted, was responsible for his actions, and was willing to work as a hired laborer (verse 19).
.
As followers of Jesus, we are commanded to forgive others when they repent and repent (Luke 17: 3,4) . Moreover, in that same spirit of humility and love, we must help those who need to forgive us by making sincere apologies.
A sincere apology doesn't force the other person to forgive, but it is the right thing to do. We must take the first step towards freedom to forgive DCM
