FINDING YOUR WAY HOME

You shine among them like the stars in the world (Philippians 2:15)

Writer Anne Lamott tells the story of a 7 year old little girl who gets lost in a big city. The boy anxiously ran up and down the streets, looking for a familiar place. A policeman saw him, realized the boy's predicament, and offered to help. The boy got into the car, and the policeman drove slowly through the area. Suddenly the boy pointed to a church and asked to get out of the car. He assured the policeman, "This is my church. I can always find my way home from here."

Many people think the church is an ancient institution that is no longer relevant to the modern world. However, I believe a church that faithfully teaches the Bible and proclaims the good news of salvation through Christ really does give all of us what we need to "find our way home."

When our church performs its God-given function, its members will humbly serve and care for one another, encouraging one another to follow Christ's example (Philippians 2:1-11). This group of congregations, through their words and lives, are also the guides for a world that has lost its way to Jesus. They serve “like the stars in the world, holding fast to the word of life” (verses 15,16).

A church that teaches the truth about Christ is not only relevant, but also urgently needed in our world. This church can help people throughout the ages find their way back home --Vernon Grounds
