THE MEANING OF A NAME

The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot (Proverbs 10: 7)

In the mid-1800s, a Texas rancher named Samuel Augustus Maverick refused to taste his cattle. So when nearby cowherds found an unmarked calf, they called it a "maverick." The word was later added to the English vocabulary to mean someone who does not side with any party and refuses to identify with himself.

Other names that describe a person's character and behavior: Judas and Benedict Arnold, both meaning "traitor". Einstein means a genius, while Solomon means a wise man.

Some of our names may become part of the vocabulary of the language, but they will show who we are and how we live, now and forever. Solomon said, “The memory of the righteous brings blessings, but the name of the wicked becomes rotten. . . . Whoever is clean in his ways, his ways are safe, but he who is crooked in his ways will be known” (Proverbs 10:7,9).

When we contemplate someone we know and admire, we will associate that person's name with qualities we would also like to have. Honesty, generosity, and love often top the list. We see all of these characteristics in our Lord Jesus Christ, who allows us to bear His name as Christians.

Today, God wants to work within us so that our name may refer to Him --David McCasland
